What’s The Difference Between A Postpaid And Prepaid Sim-Only Plan?
You might think the only difference between prepaid and postpaid plans is how payment is made: before or after using the service. However this key difference influences how the plan is designed, and the eventual benefits you get to enjoy.
Prepaid: Fixed Cost, Fewer Benefits
A prepaid plan requires you to pay in advance for the service you want to use, and you are only able to use what you’ve already paid for. Prepaid plans offer better control of your mobile expenses with no contractual commitment, however, you’ll be getting mostly basic services with limited access to premium features such as data roaming or international calls.
Postpaid: Pay Later, Plus Get More Perks
A postpaid plan lets you use the service first, which you’ll then pay for at the end of a billing cycle, usually on a monthly basis. Postpaid plans seem pricier at first glance, but they usually come with bundled services such as data roaming, and offer much higher data limits.
Don’t want to be locked in a contract? Many telcos nowadays are offering more flexibility with contract-free postpaid SIM plans. At giga, all plans are postpaid and commitment-free with no contracts forever! With free rollover data on all our plans, any unused data gets automatically rolled over to the next month so you’ll never run out of data!
Our giga app also lets you track and manage your service usage as well as your service charges so you never have to worry about hidden fees or bill shocks.
Ready To Switch From Prepaid To Postpaid?
giga lets you transfer your number seamlessly without any service interruptions. Simply follow these steps below:
Keeping Your Existing Number
To keep your existing number when switching to a giga postpaid SIM plan, follow these steps:
- Convert Your Number: As giga’s port-in/number transfer process does not support prepaid numbers, you will first need to put in a request to your current telco to convert your number from a prepaid to a postpaid.
- Prepare for Porting: Ensure the following before initiating the
porting process:
- Your number is an active postpaid number.
- The number is registered in your name and ID (giga is unable to carry out a transfer of number ownership).
- You have no outstanding bills or contracts with your current telco. (Still in a contract? Watch this video to learn how you can sign up for giga first and port in later once your contract ends.)
- You do not need to cancel your line with your current telco, giga will handle the porting process for you.
3. Sign Up in the giga App: Download the giga app and sign up for a postpaid SIM or eSIM plan.
A temporary number will be assigned to you while your new SIM card is being delivered to your doorstep.
Once you have received and activated your giga SIM/eSIM, your port-in request will be processed within 1 working day. Meanwhile, you can still continue to use your existing telco’s SIM card.
You will receive a confirmation email as soon as your port-in request is approved, and your temporary giga number will be automatically replaced by your existing number from your ex-telco.
All that’s left to do is to simply insert and activate your new giga SIM card, or install your new giga eSIM. If you opted for a giga eSIM, watch this video for detailed instructions on how to install it.
